Went to the garden centre today which was lovely apart from the extensive use of nitrogen fertilizers in evidence. Lots of wonderful plants including banana trees in pots so we are very hopeful for the survival of ours now. I will bring my mini-greenhouse on the next removal trip so we will have somewhere to put smaller, fragile plants - such as the avocado saplings - over winter if it gets very cold. I think the patio will always be fairly safe as it so protected. It is more a problem of too much sun out there in the summer…
Anyway, we bought a jasmine to climb up the pergola (if you can call it that) and some herbs for the kitchen windowsill plus a bag of potting compost and two large plastic pots for the orange and lemon. We wanted some nice ceramic containers but in the end couldn’t find the right size and shape so ended up with cheap and cheerful. Also bought some bulbs but need to get some cheap pots.
We agree that we would have some sort of compost bin if we had a larger terrace but in the meantime being able to recycle ALL our cardboard, paper, plastics, tins and tetrabriks seems to make up for not being able to recycle organic matter. And of course we hardly have to use the van at all…Certainly makes me think that living deep in the country is not as green as it first appears…
NURTURING OUR SOUL AND OUR SOIL
When we plant we return literally to our roots: Developing appreciation of our inner cycles and those of the earth to make our lives empowered, creative and sustainable. What We Grow explores the synergistic relationship between environmental and personal well being and looks at a move towards lifestyles that are both ecologically and psychologically healthy.
