NURTURING OUR SOUL AND OUR SOIL

When we plant we return literally to our roots: Developing appreciation of our inner cycles and those of the earth to make our lives empowered, creative and sustainable.

What We Grow explores the synergistic relationship between environmental and personal well being and looks at a move towards lifestyles that are both ecologically and psychologically healthy.

Creative Ideas – Why The Air All Around You Is Filled With Tiny Idea Seeds

Many of us who are creative complain that if only we were able to have
more great ideas, we could be so much more creative.

We feel like a passionate gardener without any plants, just staring at
a field of dirt wondering when we’ll ever see a few green shoots poking
through. If only we had the beginnings of some plant life, we could
then apply all of our passion and nurturing to cultivate them into the
most wonderful thriving organisms. But all we see is a barren plot of
dirt.

Just sitting, waiting, hoping that suddenly you’ll be overwhelmed with
ideas is not enough. It’s the equivalent of the gardener sitting
staring at her sorry looking plot and hoping someone will come along at
any moment and plant it full of seeds for her.

If you’ve been lacking in creative ideas for a while, and you don’t
take any steps to change your behaviour, then guess what? You’re going
to be lacking a ideas for a whole lot longer! You need to find ways to
gather seeds, before you even think about sowing them and nurturing
them into glorious plants.

Fortunately, there a plenty of effective ways of doing this.

The first crucial step is to believe that ideas are all around you,
just waiting to be gathered. Imagine you’re in the middle of a crop
field at the end of the harvest, strong winds are billowing all around
you, filling the air with thousands of tiny seeds. All you need to do
is hold out your palm and dozens of these seeds will settle.

It’s the same with creative ideas. They’re constantly swirling all
around you, you’ve just got to be open to receiving them and capturing
them.

Here’s a quick demonstration to prove it to yourself. Look around you
and choose 3 random objects. Then think of a short story where these 3
objects were the at the centre of the plot. As soon as you have this
challenge, your creative mind rises to it, and begins to make
connections and associations between the random objects. In other
words, you begin producing ideas, with no preparation, and at a
moment’s notice.

Ideas don’t have to appear as fully formed stories or plots or
paintings or films. In fact they rarely do, if ever.

An idea is simply a tiny seed in your hand. Just as in the harvest
field, you could open your palms to catch the seeds, in your creative
life simply open your mind to catch the ideas that are always around
you.

The more you starting looking for ideas in everything you see and do,
and the more you capture, the more ideas will flow.

And then, like a happy gardener, you can begin planting them, tending
them and watching them grow...

Thanks, Dan. I like that analogy of seeds and ideas and enjoyed the story that started immediately forming when I looked at my desktop and picked three random items. I think I'll do that as a writing exercise !
